My Reflections of the L.O.R.E. weekend,

    Monday, March 2, 2009, 11:45 AM [General]

Firstly, L.O.R.E. stands for the Loyal Order of Renaissance Enthusiasts. It is the educational end of our renaissance festival. Now do to my mundane job I could only teach on Saturday. I must say that the day was picture perfect. The weather was perfect not too hot, not too cold, but just right. My classes were not until after the lunch break. In which, our promoter of the faire fed us up some good hearty grub. Now, I could have taken a few classes in the morning but I decided to finish prepping for my two classes and talk to a few people I haven't seen since the gathering on new years day and just soak up the energies that is the faire site. Discussed a few things with my guilds Grand High Minion (caretaker) and my new role with the guild, as Vice Guild Master, and filled him in of the class run down since he was assisting me with the classes.

My first class was on Runes. Predominately as a loose language class. We went over each rune of the futhark (alphabet) and what the meanings of each rune were. I purposely did not do the class as a divination class, not enough time and not all persons involved with faire have pagan roots, which is contradictory to popular belief. The only thing that was a problem, a little one, was that I only had two people that came to the class. But the two I had were very attentive.

My second class based more on a whim I had for quite sometime, since I play the role of Galileo Galilei many of the people I've come in contact during the run of faire, most of the time, forget that I portray not only Galileo Galilei the astronomer but also the mathematician as well, So I decided that I'll do an introduction to Mathematics in Nature/ the Language of God, a Small Journey from the numbers 1 through 9. I had about seven people show up for the class. Overall the class went well. Our education director came by as I was wrapping up the class and asked if they liked this class and would like to have it for next L.O.R.E. weekend in October. They all agreed! Mission accomplished. A suggestion came into play to tweak the class just a bit, for the next L.O.R.E. What was the role of mathematics in the renaissance period and how it can be applied to the people of the time and not just philosophically. It was a great suggestion. The education Director and I will get together and coordinate what I need to prep on this one.

I'm glad that even with a low turn out with the classes, not just mine, the day was wonderful, the people that showed up for class, were great, and I can hardly wait for our run of faire this season. I hope more people by word of mouth and a little advertising, come to the next L.O.R.E. event in October. It really gets us connected with the Renaissance period of history. All I know is that by teaching the classes what ever they may be, and I've now been doing it for about a year, gets me more excited for the faire season to start for us at the Koroneburg Faire, but first there's the Palm Springs Ren. Festival! Huzzah and Umffah!

    Ciao For Now!

Greetings unto thee this goodly morn, sir. To be sure the doings of faire be toilsome but gladsome all the same. Such labor doth lift the spirits and gladden the soul, methinks, and how better than during such dire times we now face.

I shall await with keen witt thy scribings upon the mysteries of the Runes, goodly sir, and wilt seek me thy postings.

Sorry, we have never gone that far south before, and with the economy this year... chances are we will only do the one faire this year at Auburn... maybe one or two others that are local for us... Fair Oaks and Folsom being the closest...
